Your Nose May Hold the Answer to an Imbalanced Facial Profile: Here’s How

Let’s start with an important question – does facial symmetry matter? Yes, it does to a large extent. When both halves of the face mirror each other in terms of the location and size of the external organs, a person’s score on the scale of attractiveness increases.

Though it may be affected due to differences in the position of the eyes or the shape of the chin, the nose is more often than not the main reason. This is why cosmetic procedures like Piezo rhinoplasty are becoming more popular.

What do you see when you stand in front of the mirror? If it’s a specific feature that you would like to change, then your sight would automatically be fixated on that. However, if all you can perceive is a mysterious asymmetry, it could more than likely be the result of the nose.

In this article, we will discuss how the nose can impact the facial profile and what corrective measures can be a life-changing tweak.

A Prominent Feature Impacting Appearance

Located at the center of the face, the nose forms a distinct part of anyone’s appearance. Whether you look at yourself in the mirror or have someone look at you, it’s practically impossible to avoid glancing at the nose.

The nose is composed of many intricate parts, a vital organ that belongs to the respiratory system. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the different parts include the bone, nasal cavities, cartilage, cilia and hair, nostrils, nerve cells, septum, and sinuses.

Some of these parts are internal and will not affect the nose’s appearance. Others like the septum, cartilage, and bone play a huge role in how the nose looks. Changes like a deviated septum or a prominent hump can make the nose look crooked or deformed in shape.

Being the focal point of the face, the nose will impact one’s overall visual appeal and facial identity. Now, what counts as a beautiful nose is subjective. However, some of the common factors that are considered include –

  • Proportion and symmetry – When a nose is symmetrical or has proportions that complement the rest of the face, it is considered attractive.
  • Natural appearance – A nose that appears natural, and not fake or made up, is deemed to be beautiful.
  • Defined tip – When the tip of the nose is well-defined, and not too flat or protruding, it enhances the overall look of the organ.

Truth Hidden in Plain Sight: Common Aesthetic Nasal Issues

People of all age groups can suffer from functional or aesthetic nasal issues. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released the 2023 statistics of people who underwent corrective nose surgery or rhinoplasty. The numbers were among the highest in the category of facial surgeries, only to be preceded by eyelid operation.

In some cases, the surgery may have been performed purely to enhance the individual’s overall appearance. In others, the aim would have been to improve functionality, especially if an accident was the cause. Let’s look at some typical aesthetic nasal issues people face.

  • A humped nose is the result of a rounded profile from the base to the tip of the nose.
  • A crooked nose happens when the organ is not aligned well from the front. It may be caused due to genetics or trauma.
  • Improper nose length can lead to dramatic aesthetic issues.
  • Extreme width when compared to the rest of the facial features can throw one’s overall appearance out of balance.
  • The bulbous tip is a situation where the nose’s tip is too broad or has an unnecessarily defined shape.
  • Alar flare concerns the nostrils that may be too wide or round.
  • Alar retraction occurs when the nostrils are positioned at an angle where the inside of the nose is visible.
  • An irregular septum is the result of deviation or irregularities in the walls dividing the nostrils.
  • A misshapen nose is often due to injury or genetics and may lead to breathing problems if not corrected promptly.

Traditional vs. Piezo Rhinoplasty

Traditional rhinoplasty, nose job, or corrective nose surgery is manually done by plastic surgeons to resize or reshape the nose. Piezo rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is the latest technique performed using ultrasonic vibrations instead of surgical tools.

The latter has several advantages to offer over the former procedure. These are as follows –

  • Piezo rhinoplasty is minimally invasive when compared to its traditional counterpart. As a result, it causes little to no pain or discomfort.
  • Due to less pain, bruising, and swelling, Piezo rhinoplasty patients recover a lot faster. They may be able to resume normal daily activities within five to seven days of the procedure.
  • According to Shah Aesthetic Surgery, Piezo rhinoplasty’s ultrasonic vibrations can be transmitted to the bone directly. As a result, no damage is incurred to the surrounding tissues. The use of chisels and hammers in traditional rhinoplasty can cause unexpected fracture lines or trauma to the adjacent tissues.
  • Since traditional rhinoplasty is performed manually, there is a likelihood of inaccurate proportions. Piezo rhinoplasty can lead to a more controlled and precise correction of the nose.

Based on our observation, the nose can make or break the appearance of one’s face. It is truly marvelous how simple corrections to this vital organ can enhance one’s look to a whole new level. Perhaps this is why the rhinoplasty market is expected to become $4.7 billion by 2025.

What’s even more interesting to note is the fact that the piezoelectric devices market is already a whopping $30.61 billion. This means more and more people who want a nose job are opting for the safer and more accurate procedure.
