Using clean sanitary products, changing them every 4–6 hours, and washing the intimate area with clean water are simple steps that go a long way.”

Taking care of yourself during your period is not just about staying clean, it’s about staying healthy, confident, and infection-free. “Menstrual hygiene is more than just a monthly routine; it plays an important role in a woman’s overall health, and every girl deserves to learn how to care for herself,” says Dr. Punita.

Here is why menstrual hygiene is so important:

1.  Prevents infections

Not changing pads or not washing properly can lead to rashes, irritation, or even serious infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs) or reproductive tract infections.

2.  Keeps you comfortable

Good hygiene habits like wearing clean underwear and using the right product help you feel fresh and avoid discomfort or bad odor.

When you know how to manage your period well, you feel more confident at school, work, or even at home.

1.   Change pads or tampons on time

2.  Use what suits you best

Every woman’s body and flow are different. Some feel comfortable with pads, while others prefer tampons, menstrual cups, or even period panties. Choose what makes you feel clean, protected, and at ease.

  • For light flow, thin sanitary pads or panty liners may be enough.
  • For heavy flow, opt for longer, thicker pads or higher-absorbency tampons or cups.
  • If you are trying menstrual cups or tampons for the first time, consult a doctor or read proper guides to use them safely.

3.  Keep your private area clean

Maintaining personal hygiene during menses is very important.

  • Wash your vaginal area with clean, lukewarm water at least twice a day once in the morning and once before bedtime.

  • Avoid tight underwear or synthetic fabrics, especially during your period, as they trap sweat and heat.
  • Make sure to change your underwear daily and, if needed, carry an extra pair with you during heavy flow days.

6.  Wash hands before and after changing

8.  Eat healthy food

Your diet during menstruation can impact how you feel. A healthy, balanced diet can reduce pain, improve mood, and give your body the strength it needs.

  • Eat iron-rich foods like spinach, dates, pomegranate, and beans to make up for blood loss.
  • Eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein-rich foods to stay healthy during your periods.
  • Avoid too much caffeine, spicy or salty snacks and junk food, they can make cramps or bloating worse.

9.  Do light exercise

  • You might feel tired or lazy during your period, but gentle physical activity can help.
  • Walking, yoga, or stretching exercises can reduce menstrual cramps and boost your energy.
  • Avoid heavy workouts if you are feeling weak, but moving a little can improve your mood and circulation.

10. Track your periods

  • Keep a record of your menstrual cycle. It helps you understand your body better.
  • Mark your start and end dates each month.
  • Track your flow, mood, pain levels, or any unusual symptoms.
  • You can use a calendar or a mobile app to track your menses easily.
